DNT Bysommer for The Norwegian Trekking Association

In the best spirit of the saying: “It’s not the goal, it’s the journey.”
A lo-tech web app with turn-by-turn guiding proved to be the best choice.

DNT Bysommer for The Norwegian Trekking Association

DNT, known as The Norwegian Trekking Association, is Norway’s largest hiking and outdoor activity organisation. It’s also one of the country’s most beloved institutions, reflecting Norway’s deep-rooted connection with nature. With over 300,000 members, DNT excels at serving outdoor enthusiasts across the nation.

In the summer of 2014, DNT Oslo and Surroundings – a branch of the main organisation —, recognized an opportunity to encourage locals to explore the abundant trails in Oslo’s surrounding forests. They curated a selection of 10 of the most accessible and scenic routes to showcase the area’s natural beauty.

Given the project’s limited budget and time constraints, a web app emerged as the ideal solution. Far from being a compromise, this approach allowed the team to focus on the essence of the journey rather than getting bogged down in the technical complexities often associated with native app development. This decision proved to be a masterstroke, as DNT Bysommer not only won FWA’s Mobile of the Day award but, more importantly, reignited users’ passion for their local forests.
